Need help buying a laptop
« on: September 05, 2006, 12:21:18 PM »
I am looking at getting a new laptop. Acer, Asus, or Fujitsu.

1. I want to spend around $2000.
2. Something with a weight around 4-5lbs, not over 5lbs tho.
3. I want a dedicated video card. I do a lot of Autocad work.
4. 1-2gigs of ram
5. 80-100GB HDD.
6. 13.5 - 14 inch screen, or larger if the weight will be low.
7. good warranty coverage.
8. Preferably Intel.

Thanks.

I have but there is so much to pick from I dont know what to buy.

When the site says this "Video:Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 Dynamic Video Memory" That isnt a intergrated video card is it?

How do the integrated cards work, do they all steal memory from the computer, or does it have its own?
How can I tell if it has its own memory

    Thanks

unless they give you the option to pick a differnet vid card then its intergated.

      maybe this will help.

but intergraded vids are on the motherboard and im not sure if they use the system memory or not.

I think an Alien-ware would suit your needs. They are higher technology laptops, but very expensive. (Still available for under $2000)
These are gaming laptops, (and PC's) and should be able to handle what you want it to.

I'll find the address for their site...

      http://www.alienware.com/

Theres quite a few. You may be able to find one without the "Alien" type style, you should be able to find a normal skin for it.

BTW: Intel Integrated Graphics cards are the worst! I doubt Alien-ware has them, but watch out for other laptop manufacturers!

Also Autocad has some very extensive and informative Forums as well...maybe a post there for suggestions might get some good ideas goin.
My architect buddy bought a vid card 2 years ago because he does a ton of ACad work.
That vidcard even 2 years old still smokes some of the best gamer cards out there.
