« on: September 09, 2006, 08:47:56 AM »
I need to reinstall Window 98. in Dos
I close my window 98 and select option "Next time open window in
MS DOS "

Next time I open it, it goes to DOS C:\Windows>
After reboot,  I put the disc and change the directory and type setup.exe in Dos
The Windows set up to 100% before it complete it need to reboot a few times for checking types of hardware connected.
Usually after a few  reboot it goes to Windows 98 directly and reinstall is complete but
this time it goes to DOS C:\Windows>. And not installation screen

I can go to Safe Mode with wallpaper and icon and no file is lost. But windows reinstall is not fully complete after reboot cannot goes back to install screen to check hardware install. But it goes to DOS C:\Windows>. I type
DOS C:\Windows>win , it response as return to windows press enter. After I press it still goes to DOS C:\Windows>. After reboot and not go to Window every time. How to solve?

The problem is Windows is not fully install,
windows reinstall is not fully complete after reboot cannot goes back to install screen to check hardware connect. But it goes to DOS C:\Windows> every time and cannot go to Window with desktop, wallpaper and icon.

How about starting from scratch?  Reformat your hard drive then install Windows.  If you have anything on your hard drive that you want to save and are still able to do so, do that immediately.

Create a Windows startup boot disk using a floppy. You should be able to do this somewhere in control panel. Boot from that disk and try reinstalling from there.

Boot to safe mode and insure that you don't have your AV loading or running at start. AV should always be disabled when reinstalling over the existing setup as it can prevent Windows setup from writing to the HD and accessing the boot records.

edit: From the DOS prompt type win and press enter. Other characters in the command will return Bad Command or File Name.

      I just fought a battle with 98SE.

I found this link to be very helpfull to freshen up and start over totally clean.

Maybe you can just start from the format section.

Do you have a custom built computer or a brand name one?

Do a repair install using a bootdisk - 99.9% guarantee that no data files will be lost or corrupted..

One good deed is worth more than a year of good intentions.

The original poster is missing but this is a classic example of how something really simple can be made to be quite complicated. I suspect this person is not following the correct pattern of using a Win98SE boot disk, formatting the drive and then just typing e:setup and pressing enter.

It's not rocket science folks.  ;)

Thats funny, and probably really true in a lot of cases.

I was reading, and not once but several times. My problem was I was dealing with two hard drives and did not realize it.

So I removed one and fdisked, formatted, re-installed the OS, the drivers. Its good now.

Now my sister wants a newer OS in it.  ::)
