hard drive space

i have a 40GB hard drive that is showing useage of 23GB but adding windows, program files & my documents it only comes to 16GB,   where has the rest of it gone!!!!!!!!!!!!please :(

my hard drive is a 40GB
when i right click the c drive it tells me & go to properties it tell me
i only have 11GB free
when i open the c drive i have 3 folders, documents and settings, windows & program files

i have windows loaded which = 2.70 GB
program files            =1.20 GB
my documents                      =14.0 GB
running windows xp  and am showing all hidden folders

Can't understand your post.  Where are you looking to get the free space and used space readings?  Not sure what you mean when you say, "adding windows, program files & my documents".  Are your figures before or after "adding windows, program files & my documents"?  Can you restate the question?

    You have a 40GB HDD , of wich 23GB are free.
    And now, once installing Windows again its down to 16GB?

    That seems right for a Windows XP installation, but u should install windows on a clean HDD.

    Or maybe the guy above me is right, and we have no idea what ur saying.

      I bet you have some digital photos  stored there as well right ?

      Are you concerned where 7 Gb of files are?

      Some specifics would helpful.  What version of Windows are you using? Also, are you showing hidden files/folders?
