Win 98SE won't boot up
« on: September 12, 2006, 11:00:17 AM »
Computer was up and running, then started beeping.  When trying to re-boot, it starts beeping and will not boot up.  One really long beep, then one short beep.  We replaced the CMOS battery, but still beeping.

We've been told that it's probably a motherboard error and we should just go buy another computer.

Can anyone offer me any other ideas of what I can do to try and resolve this issue?

Thanks!

Dusty

Here is a list of beep-codes.  The codes are dependent on which Bios is being used.  If none of the codes correspond to yours suggest that you Google for your Bios.

Good luck

Welcome to Computerhope Frustrated in TX.

Have you tried reseating the memory or video card?

Did this happen after you added a new item of hardware?

We already pulled video card and re-set.

What did the beep code indicate? WHat happened prior to all of this? What SCSI devices?

That computer is probably old enough that is cheaper and smarter to buy another one than upgrade it. What is it being used for?

The beep code indicates that it is the RAM.

WE use it for home personal stuff, WORD, EXCEL, Turbo tax, as well as internet.  Some CD burning, nothing really strenuous.

Carefully remove those RAM modules and clean the gold contacts with a QTip and rubbing alcohol...allow them to dry thoroughly.
While the RAM is drying use a can of compressed air to blow out all the dust bunnies inside that case especially the fans.
Blow out the RAM slots as well.
Carefully replace the RAM modules, plug in the PSU and restart the machine.
You should be good to go.
If the above does not work DLoad and run MemTest...let it run for a few hours. This will tell you if your RAM has gone south, if so replace it with the same type/speed.
