    advice* ,initial startup  Sunday  night
    « on: September 16, 2006, 05:36:33 AM »
Would like simple (has to be 4me) way to initially check out new build this morning. I have read some in research but would also like this forums opinion. Safest way to verify my mobo and hardware on my install is going ok.
My plan is to attach cpu & heatsnk fan, hd / optical drive / floppy / and all fans,
besides checking green lite on mobo and making sure fans are running  , what else should i be looking for? I did receive the wndws xp upgrade other day as well.

    MBoard
    CPU and fan
    1 stick of RAM
    Vid card

Hook these up to the PSU and fire it up before you install it in your case...i use a rubber mat on my test bench for this procedure.

Good Luck take your time and make sure to take static precautions.

This is a pathetic answer! I just got in  9:50pm, I was out with a freind and got myself a kitten. Can you tell me how to boot it up!  Will attempt tomorrow after securing kitty in bathroom*.

          mobo:  Asus VM-CSM
          cpu:     Athlon 64 3500+ Venice w/ stock heatsnk-fan
psu: tried   500w  installed in case  &  420w  (new)  i took out
both fans on each psu  did not come on
1 gig stick corsair value select in A-1 slot

1.st  attempt had a 15" lcd plugged into mobo and warmed up  (had rear end 120 mm fan plugged into psu as well)
2.nd  (unpluged monitor & rear fan) just power to mobo

both times  green mobo light came on and stayed on,  cpu or rear case fans did not  come on...    left on the power each time no more then 10 seconds, no sounds, no smells , nothing,  just green lite ???
mobo was / is attached to  case removable wall secured on a table top only.
24 pin psu plug is inserted correctly cause it has to be to work... ???
any ideas for Einstein here?  lol

If you have it set up like Patio suggests, try taking out the RAM & boot it.  If it's a bad stick the thing should fire up and give beep code that it's missing RAM.

It's going to be a process of elimination.  Start with the easy stuff...RAM.  Sounds like you've already tried 2 PSU's and you're tunningout of components (mobo & CPU) are about the only things left.  :-[

                Thanks  ALE...

i am trying to figure out how 2 new  psu's are not powering a 80mm fan, but the suckers have like one kilowatt or something to power the tiny mobo green light?

I didn't quite follow what you were saying because the way you type is far too confusing, but have you connected the +12 volt connector to the mainboard? If you do not, the system will not even boot. Unless it doesn't need one, ofcourse. But all Pentium/AMD systems do.

I was told to test out this before putting everything in the case and hooking up.
I have the mobo connected to the inside case panel, laying on a table (took all precautions agaisnt static discharge) .
Have one gig of ram in the A1 slot.
installed new AMD cpu easily/ lined up arrows etc..  then connected "easily" heatsink/ fan, hooked in/ snapped in place easily. Had a 15" lcd plugged to back of mobo already turned on from wall  socket (power)..
then, just for the heck of it, laying next to all this is the new case with a 120mm rear fan.
I plugged in the 24 pin into mobo, 4 pin into case fan, and of course the cpu fan into the mobo.
double checked everything and turned on "new" psu>   no fans came on, but the green mobo light did come on. Nothing came on screen.  Is this normal? Is something not grounded maybe because the fans would not come on?  I then took out everything and just plugged in the 4 pin rear fan to new psu already installed in the case,  nothing?
Plugged another 80 mm fan to psu  nothing. Took another "working psu" in another room and plugged the 80mm fan to it holding by a wall socket,  nothing ?
Yes, the power to my apartment was working;-o

What do you have the MBoard setting on ? ?

It is not impossible to get 2 bad PSU's in a row...actually with cheapo ones it's probably quite common.

                  patio.   8-)

Are the case connectors properly seated?

Thanks for the responses so far, its appreciated!
I have the metal mobo- insert that u attach the mobo to "outside" the case with the door panel off to the side.
The mobo is secured (screwed) into the metal insert (wall) side laying on top of a pillow case on a hard table.
The psu is inside the new case inches from this on the table. I connected the psu to the mobo (24 pin) attached the heatsink/fan pin to mobo,
the ram is in there too. I also have a fan in the case hooked up to the psu. NO fans came on, nothing came on the screen (lcd)  << maybe thats normal and the green mobo light did come on ?
Maybe nothings wrong and I need to hook everything else up ?
I won't be in till way late tonight to attempt another try but please respond to this if its pertinent or any ideas. I think its something stupid I did ?
I have another exact new psu from same company I bought 3 weeks prior and its in my personal puter and runs awesome.  This one (giving me problems*maybe*)  is the same type but dual voltage from G-Man's advice !
