Its not the most common term, but it is the term used to discribe Adware/Spyware... you see, spyware and adware are not exactly malicious, they are more like Mad Cow Disease.
Mad cow disease is caused by a protein. Proteins have none of the main characteristics related to life.
1. It cant reproduce
2. It doesnt respond to its environment
3. It doesnt require food/air
Its not exactly malicous, (although it does convert other proteins when they come in contact)
A virus (computer) replicates itself like a virus (health/life) can in the body.
Because Adware and Spyware don't replicate, and usually don't spread, they are not really all that malicious. Therefor, they are called greyware
