Windows XP
« on: October 01, 2006, 10:19:56 AM »
I'm about to install Windowx XP Home over Media Centre edition, as Ive got loads of Spyware/Viruses etc.

Anyway, all I really want to know is this.

If I do this, will it get rid of all the viruses/spyware on my computer?

Many thanks

According to the Mothership upgrading Media Center to XP is not supported:

Contact MS first.

No, it will not get rid of a single one, and will probably cause more problems than it solves.

Get some decent protection (the others will recommend good programs) and either get your computer cleaned out or format and start again.

Im planning on formatting the HD before I install XP.

So I should be able to put XP on and get rid of the viruses shouldn't I?

As long as you reformat first and immediatly download Service Pack 2 after installing Windows XP.

But they're just going to come back if you don't read up on Windows security.

Previously I had downloaed a file share programme, and some foreign TV stations etc.

Next time, I most certainly won't be doing that.

I only really use the net for Sports news and my teams messageboards.

    Any recommended anti-virus-spyware programmes?

AVG Free and Avast, those two are free.

Is this a legal and shiny CD that says Microsoft all over it and has not been used on another machine? Is it an upgrade, OEM, or full version? If an upgrade version, do you have a qualifying version of Windows to use it?
