Coputer freezes when defragging

I'm try to run defrag on a friends computer.  She hasn't defragged in 5 years!  Anyway it will freeze every so often while I am defragging.  First at 8%, i restarted, then 10%, I restarted.  I get to 11% and it freezes, I restart, degrag again and it still freezes at 11%.

Toshiba Satellite, 64mb Ram, Windows 98se.  I'm thinking running defrag in safe mode would help, any other suggestions?

ummm try going to disk cleanup first and removing everything in there.. and do both things in safe mode that might help.

also maybe a scan disk scan might help make sure it fixes the errors it finds automatically

Every time the disk contents change, defrag will start over. With that much time and no defrag, it could be a long process.

Thanks guys!  Yea more Ram would def. help, just need to get my friend to spend the cash.  Running everything in safe mode cleared up everything.  Computer is ready to go!
