    BSOD during XP Install
    « on: October 19, 2006, 04:45:36 AM »
    I keep getting a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)
    Stop Code: 0x00000024 and "partmgr.sys"
    everytime I try to re-install windows XP on
    this "Gateway" Model 700XL
    The HDD is a Western Digital 120GB
    CPU = Intel P4
    MOBO = E210882
    RAM = 512MB PC800 rdram (rambus)
    I have changed out all ribbon cables, I have
    removed every PCI card (except VGA Video card)
    I have run memtest86, microscope v12 & many Hard Drive tests and they all come up fine!
    I've set the BIOS to "Default".
    I have tried to re-install over 10 times so far!
    The BSOD happens the same spot everytime during the
    copying files part.
    Can someone please tell me what I need to do to finish
    this re-install??? I'm about to lose my mind!!

    Thanks,

    Rob

    For how long did you run the diagnostic tests?

    You should boot with minimum hardware installed, see if the problem still occurs.

    (1 RAM stick + CPU/Heatsink + motherboard + videocard)

      I ran the diagnostic tests for a very long time...many many passes.

      As I stated in my plea for help...I am running the minimum hardware already.

      Thanks!

      Reset the CMOS to its default settings, insert a known working good RAM stick, videocard and CPU and retry.

      Still happens? I think you then pretty much narrowed it down and need to replace the mainboard.

      To be certain: You are using an original, nearly neat copy of Windows XP?

        Well, it wasn't just an idle question. A LARGE number of XP problems are from using downloaded copies. The rest are just the usual Microsoft things, if not hardware.  ;)

          It's a small rubber thing on the end of a pencil, we call them rubbers here. :)

            I don't think using a rubber is the best way to go, just putting it in and out a few times seems to do the job.
