Extract error?
« on: October 20, 2006, 03:14:39 PM »
Win.98se. Legit cd.

Am trying to extract a contents list from .cab files on the original cd.  Most give no problems but WIN98_56.CAB will not list althought it shows as having over 1meg content.  The Extract prog gives the message:

"WTCache.*censored*: starts in cabinet Win98_55 on disk '51'. No matching files."

WTCache.*censored* is the last file in Win98_55.cab, don't know what "disk '51'" refers to.

A similar message is produced when trying to extract Driver14.cab.

Are the files corrupt :-?  Could some kind person try extracting listings from their cd please :-?

Thanks

CD scratch free?

Reformatted before installing?

Diagnose RAM and HDD.

Thanks for response Raptor.

CD scratch free?   Yes, seems to be in good order.

Reformatted before installing?   Diagnose RAM and HDD.

Am unsure how these two could affect the performance of Extract.exe but yes, the hdd was formatted before intalling Win.98se altho' that was some weeks past.  The OS isn't giving any problems and the install using the same cd ran without hitch.  Have run memtest, scandisk and Seagate diagnostics without coming up with any problem.

If everything is in working order, perhaps your PC is overheating?

Why do I get the feeling I'm not being taken seriously here :-?

Why would an overheating problem manifest itself only when trying to Extract from two very specific Cab files and not when running other more resource hungry applications :-?

I even suspected a problem with the cdrom so swapped that for another with the same results.

Ah well, thanks anyway Raptor.  I have a second legit Win.98se disk coming soon and will try that..

Install and run TweakUI for Win98 which has a built in cab viewer program...

Have visited many sites and none of them list contents of  the two .cab files mentioned.

Here is a sample.

Thanks to all who read and responded.

From the Mothership

I noticed it is almost 4MG in size...but it should be where they list it.
Is the CD in good shape ? ?

Thanks for your interest Patio.

Yes, the cd is in excellent condition.  Another genuine 98se full version cd shows the same pattern as mine - no content in the cabs mentioned.

I guess it's just another M$ trick to baffle users.

Because I used to have the same problem and it turned out the PC fan was obstructed..
