    Windows Media Centre
    « on: October 31, 2006, 11:03:09 AM »
Hi there, well ive never been in this section before.
Anyway, basically we got a new laptop, great spec for an amazing price. However the thing is it comes with Windows Media Centre, which is not suitable at all for us. So i was wondering, we have a leggit copy of XP that we bought a while back for our P.C. It has been used but could we install it on this new laptop or is it impossible to install XP and get rid of Media Centre?!
    Suggestions would be welcome
    Thanks

    Chris

Why is Media Centre not suitable for you?
I did read up on it a little because I almost bought a laptop with XP Media Centre edition, (I went for XP Pro in the end) and the way I understood it is that Media Centre edition was just XP Home with some extra media features that you didn't have to use, and it was really just XP Home
I've probably got it all backwards though

Chris there are reasons not to go with Media Center so your gut reaction is good.
If XP is removed from the other machine completely you can install it on the laptop.
However upon validation it might not take because hardware has been completely changed. You will probably have to talk to a live body at the Mothership to register XP for the laptop.
Also it will involve formatting the laptop completely as there is no upgrade path from Media Center to XP...

      Ok thanks for that.
Calum i think you do have it completely backwards mate. All you gotta do is go on google images and its NOTHING like XP.
Thanks Patio, thats great. When you say there is no upgrade path could i just not stick in the disk and install it? Would it not remove media edition for me?!
      Thanks

You could use the option during setup to remove/create the partition and proceed with the XP install...

One thing to consider though...i'm not sure how different those laptop drivers would be for Media Center but to be on the safe side i would visit the manuf. site and grab all the XP drivers that are needed beforehand just in case they may be slightly different...
