WMV and AVI in Ubuntu
« on: October 28, 2006, 12:39:43 PM »
I'm sorry if this is said over and over, but I have recently installed Ubuntu Dapper Drake (I love it btw)> I'm finding it wierd having primarily used DOS, GEM and windows 3.X to XP (I know, I am a tool of the microsoft opressor!)

Anyoo, its great except totem won't play WMV or AVI (Possibly more, but I haven't got any examples to hand) files. Gives an error message about codecs and plugins. I have lloked on the interent and for a n00b like me, there are no responses that I understand.

Can someone please either link me to a simple to install program that comes with all its codecs, or give me a step by step approach to installing ones for totem.

Thx.

    this is a lifesaver for me, especially when i don't have an internet connection.

    just search what you want. it's a bit tricky, as all searches have to be one word, but once you get the hang of it you're fine.

    Search the Ubuntu wiki for "Win32 codecs" or "non-free media formats" or something in that manner. It is well documented.

      oh and one last thing: if you want the easy path out and you have a net connection, download easyubuntu, install it, and check the boxes you want.

      Alright, the sites back up.

      A friend told me to type this into the terminal;

      wget http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/files/easyubuntu-3.023.tar.gz
      tar -zxf easyubuntu-3.023.tar.gz
      cd easyubuntu
      sudo python easyubuntu.in

      Which I did. It checked my 'System sanity' and I passed, however after that I got the error;

      Your sources.list does not match your system configuration.
      Either you have changed your sources.list or an system
      upgrade has failed. EasyUbuntu will not run unless these are fixed!

      then someone linked me to this;
      http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-matic

      Which gave the results;

      Code: [Select]
      # Automatically generated sources.list
      # http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-matic
      #
      # If you get errors about missing keys, lookup the key in this file
      # and run these commands (replace KEY with the key number)
      #
      # gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv KEY
      # gpg --export --armor KEY | sudo apt-key add -

      deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-updates universe multiverse
      deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe multiverse

      Which is all very well, but what do I do with it??

        don't give up on me yet!!!

        i don't trust you friend. just kidding! just search easyubuntu on google and go to their site. then download the package and put it on your desktop. the in the console:

        Code: [Select]
        sudo dpkg -i Desktop/easyubuntu.deb
        it should be fine. you can find it in the applications menu.

        After a reinstall or Ubuntu, easyubuntu managed a partial install. Leaving out Totem embedded in FF. Problem solved.
