How to use an old computer as an HTTP server
    « on: November 10, 2006, 03:16:55 PM »
I'm trying to use my old Pentium III as a web server to host my own *.com website. Can anyone help me with this? It only has 64MB of RAM. I would much prefer a Linux server to a Windows one. I can't afford to spend $1000 on an OS and another $500 on making the PC fast enough to run it!
    System Specs:
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    1024MB DDR400
    GeForce 7600GS
    160GB SATA II
    500-watt PSU

That's not much RAM to work with, but you could do this with Slackware or Vector. You will be limited in that Gnome or KDE will not be tolerable, so you will either have to go for a low horsepower Windows Manager (both have them) or use straight command line.

With this limited amount of RAM, only the dullest window managers are likely to work satisfactorily...  If it's just a web server you'll be running I would go for a text-only installation.  Something like CentOS, White Box Linux or TinySofa.  You can still get a GUI interface to the configuration of these servers, by virtue of Webmin.
