Computer does not recognise blank CDs
« on: November 13, 2006, 04:27:56 PM »
I run Windows XP. I have a problem with my DVD and CD-RW drives - they run okay with shop bought DVDs and CDs but neither drive recognises blank CDs / CD-RWs /DVD+RWs or CD-rS. They used to a few months ago. I have Windows Media player and also PlayCenter 2 which was recently updated.
I would be grateful for any ideas about curing the problem.   Baz

Have you tried system restore to an earlier time?

What happened immediately prior to the difficulty? Think hard.  ::)

Thanks for your welcome street1 and also the tip.
No I haven't yet tried system restore.
What data would I lose by doing that?
Do I need to download programmes and data to a USB key first?

GX1_Man.  Thanks for your help.I cannot remember anything specific before it happened.
I noticed it when I tried to copy a CD using Roxio Easy CD creator which I had previously used many times with no problems. As I don't copy CDs very often, whatever it is that is blocking the drives, probably happened many weeks or months prior to me attempting to copy the CD.
Would it possibly be a conflict with two different media players on the system?

Microsoft has a program for upper and lower filters.

Read the instructions.Read the instuctions.Read the instructions

As you scroll down the page and read the instructions, you will come to an auto fix program called'Download Guided Help'You can download and run it and it does an auto fix.

This very often helps. :-? ;D. Uncle Billy helps us sometimes.LOL

I've rarely had any luck with Billy's Troubleshooters in the past,
but I'll give it a whirl Mr street1.
Thanks again. I'll keep you posted.
