lost my audio when I reinstalled XP
« on: November 13, 2006, 10:49:14 PM »
I have an IBM T41 notepad. Recently crashed completely and I ended up doing a clean reinstall of XP (SP2). Everything works fine now but no audio. (Note: sound worked fine before crash so I know there's a sound card in there somewhere). I went to the IBM site and downloaded the drivers for the standard onboard sound card but when I followed the install directions I discovered that the sound card is not even listed in device manager. No yellow question mark....just not there.
Since I know there is a sound card in there, how do I get the computer to know about it too?
thanks

Download, unzip, install and run Everest Home Edition
    Everest

Select Computer>Summary from the left hand screen.
Right click in the right hand screen & select Copy All
    Paste the details in here.

Only the drivers from the IBM site should be used. Make sure they are the correct ones. You will have other motherboard drivers that will have to enabled first.

Make sure the sound is enabled in the BIOS (F1 at boot).

This is the more important issue I see.

    SMART Hard Disks Status      FAIL

Sorry I am an idiot. Please be patient. Don't know what to do now. Have no idea how to enable "motherboard drivers" either.
The drivers I downloaded from the IBM site but can't install because it wants me to go to the sound thing in device manager and it is not there.
I did the F1 BIOS thing and can't find anything in there about sound. I did "restore defaults". Still no sound device to be seen. I know it's in there somewhere.
Have no idea what the SMART hard disk thing means or what to do about it.
What shall I do now? The sound worked fine before I had to reinstall XP.

You do not have a sound card.  You have a sound controller on the motherboard.  In the Windows Device Manager you do not see a heading called Sound, Video and Game Controllers, or something similar?
