Cannot Open the Computer Tower
« on: November 14, 2006, 06:37:42 AM »
I know this may seem elementary to techies but I need some help. I recently purchased a used computer without a modem or soundcard. I had both of these from my previous computer which recently died and planned to install them in the new tower.

Long story short...I can't open the tower. Is there such thing as a locked or locking tower? There is one external screw which I removed but made no difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Some towers open from the front  >:(

Can you remove the front bezel?  If so take a look there ;)

Try to slide the side cover toward the rear of the case. If it is a full tower, you might have to remove the top before the side panel can be removed.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

Some actually do lock, I know there are some old Compaqs that can because I spent about half an hour trying to open one and then I found out it was locked in the BIOS
Try going into the BIOS (del or F1 or F2 or F10 or possibly another key) at startup and look through the settings, see if there's a case lock option
Unlock it from there and wait for the case to *click* before exiting

Neither did I until I was working on these old Compaqs
I suppose the lock was to stop the students (it was at a college) messing with the insides and it worked better than an outside lock because it was password protected
I guess it was also easier and/or cheaper

That's actually a quite good idea. Although annoying if you don't know about it and need to get in there. :/

I've come across one where the screws were on the bottom, check there too?

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.
