I would like to see what percentage of the online community uses Windows vs Linux vs Mac OS X. Please vote!

Heh, regardless of opinions on what OS is the best, you have to realize that Bill Gates isn't a trillionaire for nothing. Over 95% of computers sold come with Windows. So, I voted Windows, though I have a dual-boot Windows/Kubuntu box.

About that... Do you know of a reputable PC manufacturer that pre-installs linux to recommend to noobs who don't want to build their own PC?

I say Windows. Almost all computers come with it nowadays, so there's the home users. Also, many modern day schools use Windows now (Thank God they switched from MAC).

You asked people what OS is more used. For a start, which OS is more used is not affected by the OS used by people on this forum. Secondly, "What's Linux" does not answer this question. Sigh, I can't be bothered to explain. This poll just sucks and is completey pointless from a statistics point of view.

Sure, it has less bugs, and is safer, but all things for a reason. MAC limits you so much on what you can do. Also, not many programs are available for it. You need a special MAC version. It's good for video editing and internet. I wouldn't use it for anything else.

Linux has more variety than Mac, true. But for some reason people don't like products without a multibillion dollar corporation backing it up. Thus why windoze still EXISTS. sigh, I wish they would lower the price to make it easier on gamers; nobody makes games for linux.

i believe people are getting tired of seeing windows everywhere. for the first time i saw a Mac commercial on TV slamming windows. i guess its gaining popularity.

Sure it'll take awhile before people switch to linux. But, if enough non-gamers switch to linux because of cost, game developers will start creating games for linux. Then gamers will switch to linux. Windows will quickly lose it's appeal. Mac OS X will then be the commercial product. While Bill will try to keep the xbox 3/4/5/6/7/8/9 running (depending on how long it takes to exhaust his pocket.)

That was one (but not all) of the dilemmas with OS/2, which I still feel was the better OS. If you try to maintain that compatibility, then people write Windows programs and there was really no need for OS/2 programs. When Windows morphed into 32 bit (on their timetable) the API's were not available, so people had to choose Windows or OS/2. The new Windows 32 bit OS (Win95) was backward compatible so one OS could run the new and the old apps. New OS/2 apps were not being developed and that and the marketing caused it's demise. Windows came bundled on new machines and that would have been enough right there.

No, if Linux is to succeed at replacing Windows, there need to be decent Linux apps, and for the most part there are, with the exception of games which are still mostly Window centric. Emulation is not the answer in my opinion. Applications will always run better on their native OS, rather than any emulator.

The other thing that will help Linux is Windows own restrictive licensing. WGA is the best thing Microsoft could have done for Linux. Vista will be even tighter, and if people have to plunk down hundreds of dollars for an OS that requires incredible hardware investments to function the alternatives look a lot better.

The bundling thing is another hurdle however. Most people use the OS that comes on their new computer purchases. That's where most of Vista's "sales" will come from.

vista is apparently going to be forced on us. windows has already started writing "vista only" programs. im pretty sure any program done by windows will eventually be "vista only". ex. halo 2 for PC will only work on vista.

its like they can make a withdrawl from us at anytime. a month later they can release another version that is also not backwords compatible.

Hmmm. Kind of hard to rid of windoze. Most people buy a prefab PC, which comes with windoze pre-installed. When people get tired of having to buy a new PC every year because bill puffs up his OS even more... Another issue is hardware support. Even if you use your old windoze (98SE in my case), device companies don't bother writing drivers for it. Then you're stuck. Latest and worst Windoze or Linux without any games. Hmmm. For people that just want to surf the web and write up reports, linux is perfect. For gamers, they're kind'of stuck.

I like Win98SE, but there is no point in putting it on new hardware, plus its no longer supported by MS for critical patches. Its best to match OS with Hardware of its time and game of its time, less likely to have problems.

Like I have a Pentium 1 MMX, 200 Mhz running dual boot Windows 95B/98SE for older gaming like StarCraft, Diablo 1, WarCraft II, and the stack of Sierra Games that require older hardware for sound support on the Sound Blaster 16 ISA Card. The 3 games listed actually run fine on newer hardware as long as it is a 32-bit OS, but I've heard about gaming troubles with 64-bit OS.

Ever since Windows 2000 Pro, I have switched over to NT OS for security and reliability. Stinks though that MS will be canning support on Windows 2000 Pro/Sever in January 2007 from what a friend told me.
