XP Update Wiped Out DLLs and More
« on: November 20, 2006, 09:31:24 PM »
XP SP2:

So I clicked on my "An update is ready for your computer"...

And against my better judgment told it to install IE 7.

When it rebooted, it came up with checksum error, "bad or corrupt WININET.DLL".

So I booted in Safe mode.

Came up with checksum error, "bad or corrupt SHDOCVW.DLL".

So I copied WININET.DLL from another XP SP2 machine onto a USB stick, launch UBCD4WIN on the bad machine, rename \SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL to WININET.DLL.OLD, and copy WININET.DLL from USB stick onto bad machine.

Reboot, and get the SHDOCVW.DLL error.

So I did the same thing, but copying SHDOCVW.DLL, and rebooted.

Huzzah, for now!

Got to the Windows User signon screen, clicked on my name, and...

The screen is blank. The screen is the color of my Windows background, but there are no icons. The mouse pointer is there, and it responds to the touchpad, but that is it.

The HD light is solid.

I have not attempted restarting in Safe because I am afraidrebooting right now will be bad.

Any advice, direction, would be great!

Thanks
Dan: You're gonna need to get someone to fix my computer.                     Kim: What's wrong with it?                     Dan: It's in several pieces on my floor.

Can you boot into safe mode (F8 at start before the Windows logo) and do a system restore? What were you using for virus/spyware protection?

Well, like I said, I was afraid to try to stop the futile loading and reboot into Safe at the time of posting.

Using AVG (Updated daily) and Zone Alarm... But I had rebooted just moments before the "update" started, so I'm feeling pretty strong there's some linkage between the XP/IE update and the whole kerfauvel here...

I DID stop and reboot into Safe... Selecting "Administrator" instead of "me"....

After a few moments, I got the following message:

Windows - Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file C:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

I started in "Normal" Safe, NOT Safe with Networking....

I hit "OK", and tried to select something - anything - in the Start menu. Before that could happen, I got:

Windows - Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\Repository\FS\OBJECTS.MAP. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

I hit "OK", and immediately got the original message:

Windows - Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file C:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.

And I STILL can't select anything in the Start menu.

Got the same error message, with the following files:
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Fax
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Games
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
- C:\WINDOWS
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
- C:\$Mft
- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Communications\Fax

And my mouse STILL does nothing.

I would without hesitation. You will most likely be able to retrieve the data if it is important.

the best thing for you would be to reformat the hard drive... that will fix everything except if the problem is hardware problem..  go to another computer and download the hard drive manf. scaning tool to check for errors.

I dread giving this advice but based on the fact you are almost at a format/install stage i would DLoad on another machine the IE7 Update and burn it to CD.
Next boot your machine into safemode and try to re-install IE7.

Not the best scenario but you just might save your bacon.

Not a bad idea, BUT I still can't get it to do anything in SAFE...

You don't need safe mode or anything else to do a reinstall. Do you have a real, shiny Windows CD, or a restore CD or what? Is there data that needs backed up first?

Oh yes there is plenty of data... Because this process somehow wiped my external HD (as noted in Hardware forum)!
