@ things put a flag up for me...

1) A Win98 machine upgrade to XP ? ?

I'm wondering if this machine comes close to the minimum requirements.

2) Why haven't you tried a Win98 bootdisk to get to a command prompt to revert the bootini back to where it was ?

The bootdisk needs to be made over on a different floppy disk
to eliminate that question.

Have you tried a program like killdisk?

Then a fdisk,delete all the partitions,then format and do a fresh
install.
