    Why does this happen?

Can u still move ur mouse, or is the monitor frozen?
If it is, then u have viruses and the freezing probably takes place when the screen saver turns on.

Download AVG 7.5 and see what u can do. If u cant do anything ur probably going to have to re-install Windows.

It could also be a hardware problem, but i doubt it.

Go to Control Panel and check your settings in Power Management...are you setup for that machine to hibernate ? ?
Sometimes you just have to wait about 20 seconds or so for the drives to spin up properly before the keyboard will respond...

Yes if you don't want this happening...
Did you try waiting as i suggested ? ?
A HDD at hibernate takes a little while to spin up.

Merely having "Enable hibernation" checked does not mean your computer is going into Hibernation.  You still have to set the length of time after which your computer goes into hibernation on the Power Schemes screen in the box at the bottom of that screen.  If you don't want to use hibernation, then you can just select Never in that box.

However, hibernation is a good feature to use, in my opinion; I'm assuming it does not cause problems with your particular system.  It saves power but allows you to resume your session just as you left it during your previous session.

Was this after leaving it on overnight?  Why not just shutdown your computer at night?  Save the electricity.  Is there some reason you need to leave it running?

What are the other settings at in Power Management ? ?

      Is this a USB keyboard ? ?

Have you considered a new keyboard ? ?
