    Disk Cleanup.....
    « on: November 24, 2006, 09:44:03 PM »
I'm hoping that someone can please help fix this problem I'm having.
I used to be able to clean up my disk drive then suddenly now it doesn't let me, it says it's scanning compress files and it doesn't continue to do anything else. Is there a way for me to fix this problem.

    thanks

What possessed you to compress the files on that drive to begin with ? ?

Any scans of compressed files will take some time...be patient.

I actually never compressed anything so I don't even know why my computer has any compress stuff.

When Disk Cleanup indicates it is scanning Compress Old Files what it is doing is compressing files which were created or modified n days ago.  n is a number of days which the user sets up by allowing Disk Cleanup to run to completion at which point it produces an on-screen report.

Scroll to Compress Old Files in that report and highlight it.  Then click on Options and a window will show the number of days which have been set.  The number of days can be changed to suit.  You can also untick Compress Old Files so that no compression will be done.

Compressed filenames are usually displayed in color (blue?).

        Good luck

No doubt this drive is formatted as NTFS which slows things down in my experience. Are you using any particular program to do this or just Windows Disk Cleanup utility? If you go to IE/Tools/Internet Options Options and delete your temporary internet files there and THEN do your cleanup it will be quicker.  ;)

You may want to look at CCleaner which does all of this and more and is free and highly recommended by us. (Just uncheck the Yahoo Toolbar installation option when loading.) Free at www.ccleaner.com

There is another method but it requires a registry edit.  See here..
