Commands to launch Windows Apps from CMD Prompt
« on: November 26, 2006, 01:02:56 AM »
Anyone know of say an alphabetical reference, or any online reference to all EXE's and COM's for Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro, so that the applications can be launched from command prompt without having to navigate to them??

Windows is a candy shell over the command prompt, so there has to be direct commands to jump to where you want without having to navigate through the GUI. Maybe not everywhere, but I am sure there are quite a few??

Also interested in any switches that may be a Windows M.U.F ( Microsoft Undocumented Feature )

I have the Guide to M.U.F's printed out for DOS 6.22 and earlier that can be found here if interrested (  http://chanae.walon.org/pub/DOS/muf16.txt  ) ...But I am sure Microsoft has added some for the Windows OS...

I discovered these that I regularly use:

Control.exe  = Opens Control Panel (Nice quick launch vs navigating there ) ;)
Notepad.exe = Notepad ( Favorite Batch & HTML editor ) ;D
Calc.exe = Opens Calculator ( quicker than navigating ) ;D

Thanks for your CIN (INPUT) on this ... Dave 8-)

Do you use the Run feature in Windows XP? For most, this feature remains unused (or rarely used). Why is that? Well, First off nearly all of the Run Commands Correspond to a particular Control Panel Item or a Utility, Tool or Task that can be accessed through Windows. There are, however, tools and utilities that I bet you never knew you had that can be accessed through the Run feature. The main reason most people don't use the Run feature is because they don't know the Commands. So...

To Access…. Run Command The shortcut to RUN command is "Windows Key + R"

 :o   WOW .... Thanks So Much Patio copy/pasting this info to my brain and my knowledge base on my HD for later reference.

I do use the Start -> RUN regularly, and found that it can be done also from the cmd prompt. But from what you are saying, it looks like Start -> Run has a bunch more than that through the cmd prompt.

BTW: Any suggestions of where there may be an entire listing if this is not all of them? I have checked Microsoft's web site, but I gues it is a question never asked, but these commands are very useful for an IT Pro like myself who like the quicker method vs treeing to it through the GUI.

THANKS ....  ;D ;D ;D

DL, you could just search for all the COMs and EXEs under Windows...

For a much quicker method of starting programs like this, investigate AutoHotKey.  :)
Only able to visit the forums sporadically, sorry.

these along with most of what patio said are found in windows/system32 folder... there are some interesting programs from way back that have been hiding there all along, some dos some windows...

Also anything you put there can be run directly from cmd prompt...

Rob - I knew I could search for all EXE and COM's, but many are not straight forward in what they do. Too bad microsoft didnt have like Linux has with a MAN Page for more info. They have HELP, but thats for DOS shell commands.
