RAM help

I am thinking about putting more RAM in my computer and wondered it there is anywhere in windows that it will tell what kind of RAM to put in and what is the total RAM that I can install in each slot, without physically opening the computer to look. I have 4 slots and when I got the computer (Dell Dimension 8300) I ordered 512 MB of RAM. I know that it has 2 slots filled with 256 each.
