McAffee vs Zonealarm
« on: November 26, 2006, 08:17:44 AM »
Hi
Don't know if I've spelt McAffee right or not, but never mind
Which do you think is better, Zonealarm free firewall (which I have) or McAffee Personal Firewall (if I don't have to pay)?
Thanks in advance

I'm using Sygate because I found both McAfee & Zonealarm to be invasive bloatware.
There are quite a few other choices out there.

Anything BUT McAfee or ZoneAlarm (and Norton, of course).

Take a look in the Sygate Applications, you will see how easy it is to change the allowed programs from allow to ask to block.
Is this just a notification that nt kernel & system have changed?
Sygate is very easy to 'reset' by simply removing all the applications on the list & starting from scratch as you have probably just been through.
As a program tries to access the internet, like IE or Email etc you will be asked to allow, ask or block.

      Thanks Fed
No problem changing the settings but i am not sure what i should and should not be allowing obvious ones I.E etc but i get a lot of C:\program\system32\Blah Blah this type of pop up not sure if i should be allowing or not.
      Perhaps this might explain better

Trying out Sygate now, seems to be pretty good
@GX1 - what's wrong with Zonealarm?  I've never liked Norton, and the one McAffee product I tried was a disaster (which is why I wanted to ask for opinion son the firewall), but I've never had a problem with Zonealarm

What does the popup look like?
A small blue box at the bottom right of your screen or a larger box in the middle with buttons to push?

First make sure your computer is clean.
            Panda Activescan
            Ewido Online Scan

Then remove all the applications and go through the 'allow, 'deny', 'ask' routine again, telling Sygate to remomber the settings as you go.

You can disable the small blue popups in Sygate>Options>General>Notifications, they are other computers probing you. Right click on the little Sygate icon, choose Logs>Security to see them.
