Crazy Acer Aspire....

My poor, insane laptop (Acer Aspire 5014wmli) boots up, scans the disks for errors and then shuts itself down again.

Skipping the scan disk shuts it down.

Booting in safe mode shuts it down.

Basically, whenever Windows starts to run, it shuts itself down.

Have you got any ideas what could be causing it? There was no warning, one day an MP3 jarred in Winamp, and my laptop has been broken ever since.  If worst comes to worst, will my data be retrievable?

Any advice appreciated.

I would start by checking the RAM with the free download at www.memtest86.com

Then check the hard drive with the free diagnostics from the appropriate hard drive maker's site. If unsure what drive is in there, use SeaTools from the Seagate site.

Once you are sure the hardware is OK, you should boot with a Linux Live CD and see if the machine is functional and you just have a software problem.

Did the laptop come with two partitions on the hard drive? Most of their desktops do, so you could put the data there and then reinstall Windows to C with the software provided. If not see the options in the link provided.

No offense to you GX but how is he supposed to download the ram tests, and other asorted programs if the computer doesnt even boot windows?

The RAM and hard drive tests do not require Windows. Neither does a Linux LiveCD.

Obviously he has another computer to use to do the downloads as he is able to post here.

If the hardware doesn't work Windows doesn't matter.  ;)

    How he post this question if....???? LOL!!!!

    Just use another bootable drive to test. (flash drive,diskette)
    Change it to 1st priority to boot.
