You can also try www.distrowatch.com for links to all distros to download and the manufacturer's page.

www.linuxquestion.org has a great forum system for either general questions or distro specific issues.

There are some variations, but most current distros are pretty straightforward. Some do require you to know what hardware is in the machine.
