If you still have your windows xp disc, you can reinstall without losing any of you files or settings. This method deletes all the windows files that are necessary to it running, then replaces them, keeping all you programs and settings working. Insert you xp cd, and restart your computer. When it says "Press any key to boot from cd", press the spacebar. Wait for it to load all the necessary writing and options. It should have a few options like:
*Install windows XP
*Use the recovery console
*Exit
Or something along those lines (I can't remember exactly). Choose the install windows xp option. It will bring up another screen saying that you already have a windows xp installation, probably saying that it's in "C:/WINDOWS" or similar. It will give you the option to format this drive, or do a repair installation. Choose the "Repair" option, and go through the steps. It will delete and load some files, this could take anywhere from 10 minutes to 45 minutes, so just sit back. When it reboots your computer, leave the cd in, but do not boot from the cd. It will go through the same installation screen it went through when you first installed windows, and you will need to go through all the same options (possibly install graphics card and network card drivers agian - though this should happen automatically), but when it's done with all this, all your programs and files will all be there if you have followed this correctly. Hope it works for you.
