I'd recommend utorrent, very small and fast with lots of options and features.
It really is awesome, I use it (only for legal stuff I hasten to add).
The slow speed is probably to do with ports or maybe just your connection speed, not sure what you need to change.

Hey Calum, can you provide a brief explanation of what bittorrent clients are used for and why some users need them?  In all my years of computing, I've surely downloaded hundreds of files but I've never had to install a bittorrent client thingy.  So, they are a bit of a mystery to me.  I hope I'm not the only one reading this thread who is clueless about bittorrent client thingies.  If I am, then I'll be :-[

Also, I see they come in different flavors?  Why so many flavors?

I'm not really sure how to explain it.
Does this help?
If not, say so, and I'll try and explain some more.
Edit: @ OP - see here for a comparison of Bittorrent clients.
Hope this helps someone anyway.

Cool, no problem.
I mainly use Bittorrent for downloading Linux ISOs, OpenOffice updates, and so on.
Like I said, nothing illegal, just things that I don't want to download through Firefox so I don't lose all progress if it crashes or I have to reboot or something.

utorrent is the fastest bittorrent client there is right now.
Computers are the future, not us. Learn everything you can about them while you still can, soon they will be learning about us... Every bit of advice that I give you is best guess, it is your choice whether or not you listen to it.

What about Azureus ? Does it have any advantages and/or disadvantages compared to µTorrent ?

I tried both (Azureus and µTorrent) and was about to switch to Azureus, but I was still downloading stuff with µTorrent... :P
Azureus shows more information than µTorrent and has more configurable features compared to µTorrent, but I don't know with which 1 I'm supposed to stick with. ::)

If you are using Firefox under Windows,  you might like to check out
    Free Download Manager.

Ignore the stuff towards the bottom of the first page that makes it seem like it works only with IE.    It works with Firefox too.

I wanted something that would let me resume downloads.
And, of course, I wanted something that was free.  :)

    Cool, thanks for that.
I might give it a try sometime.

Discussion: Why do we need these kinds of torrent software in the first place?

Go back to Calum's reply, #3, where he was replying to my post, #2, and follow the link he posted.  It explains a lot about BitTorrent clients.
