    Can't delete files without replication!
    « on: December 23, 2006, 11:10:58 AM »
Hello all, hope you can be as helpful as ever. I recently copied a number of important Word files to a CD - no problem. I subsequently went into My Documents and noticed that the files that I copied to the CD had copied themselves into My Documents again?? I thought, 'OK, just delete them' and have tried to do this a number of times. What seems to happen is that when I try to delete them they copy themselves again - thus I have up to 50-60 copies of each document and seemed to have entered some nightmare world of delete and copy :(!. Sometimes I also get the message 'cannot read from the data source' when trying to delete.

I'm Windows XP, Word 2003, Pentium 4, Mcafee Internet Suite 7, Microsoft Spyware.

Any help - I'd be very very grateful.

Can I buy and download Panda even though I have Mcafee running?

Carried out a full scan - 76735 files, 41 spyware detected, nothing 'disinfected'. Can you advise where to go from here? Thanks for your help so far.

What were you using for virus/spyuware protection? It didn't work.

Thanks very much. I am using Mcafee Internet Security Suite 7 and Microsoft Antispyware but I do need to look at improving it obviously. I do try to make sure that everything is updated regularly. Could anyone suggest how I can now actually get rid of/delete the huge number of Word files that are sitting in My Documents?

Thanks very much for your help so far.

When the computer starts tap F8 several times BEFORE you get to the Windows splash screen. THat will get you into safe mode. Try all of your scans while there and then delete the files as usual.

Did that, thanks. What seems to be happening is this. When I open My Computer and My Documents, highlight the tens of copies of each document and press the delete button, I get the message 'cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk'.

However, when I go into Start, Documents and delete the files individually, I can get rid of them. But, as there are SO many it takes for ever to even make a dent in it. I was sure could highlight multiple documents in the Document list, but must have forgotten the technique  :-[. Can you help any further. Thanks again!

Highlight the first document to be deleted. Press and hold the shift key. Scroll to the last document to be deleted and click on it. All the files in the group will be hightlighted. To send the to the recycle bin right click and select delete. To delete without sending them to the recycle bin, press and hold the shift key and press delete key.
