Why do you want to convert to NTFS? A conversion can make your drive messy in terms of fragmentation, so make sure you defragment afterwards. Unless you have a specific reason for converting I would stick to FAT32 or if I really wanted to convert, I would do a clean format. Just my opinion though.

Wait - If he has no real Win CD, how'd he get it installed in the first place? Now, I don't condone piracy, but if I were a pirate, I'd make sure I had this kind of thing on CDs, just in case things like this come up. I'm sorry, but if you're gonna do something, even something illegal, do it with a minimum of sense.

Here's what I don't get, as well: If these people want a free operating system, why not use Linux, which is proven to be more stable than Windows and more secure. Plus, downloading an ISO and putting it on CD is legal. :P

He "got it" with Win 98 and XP installed.  ;)

On the other hand, just think how rich Bill Gates WOULD be if he had really sold all of those copies of XP Pro. :o

Bah humbug! I just got the slight majority of Windows XP Home security issues fixed. The last thing I need now is more services to disable. :P

Replies 3, 4 and 5 are helping you or suggesting things to consider.

                Sorry about that.

                Try this:

                convert C: /FS:NTFS /X

The /X switch forces a dismount of the drive. If that doesn't work, it's possible that CMD can't convert the host drive within Windows.

No need to apologize for lack of political correctness, Calum. She should have said so, if that was an issue. We didn't know that was your photo, lavender.  ;)

Everyone needs a real Windows CD sooner or later. In your case it appears to be sooner.

Well if your using windows XP and and your not trying to convert your OS drive all you should need to do is

Right Click on My Computer, Click Manage, find the Disk management page , in the right hand Pane click on the drive you want to format, right click and select format

Or run this command from dos prompt "CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS"

                        And what google said
