Win 98 help
« on: January 04, 2007, 08:49:38 AM »
I was working on a project to fix my kids  computer over the weekend, and a problem attacked me not to proceed with the project I was doing.
My plan was to remove the operating system window 98 and format my hard drive and reinstall operating system again.
I have done this maybe hundred times and that was long times a go. By accident I removed win98 uninstaller when I was trying to uninstall win 98
I went back to the DOS system and tried to FDSK and remove partition system and format the disk.
In the DOS system I came across C:\Windows> I tried to change the command to C:\ It wouldn't allow me
I tried by doing this C:\Windows> C.. I kept getting wrong command. please help me with this issue

You tried to format the disk, after Fdisk?   or you did format the disk?

If I recall correctly, you're not going to be able to do much of anything - after using fdisk,  until you format the disk.

No, so far I didn't do nothing. In Control panel at Add/Remove I removed my win98 Uninstaller by accident , so I can no longer uninstall my win98.
I could not format the Disk Because I couldn't use my DOS to go to FDSK. At FDSK it would not clear or Delete the C:\ content because it is occupied by win.
My command is not allowing me to go to C:/ drive
My DOS is at C:/windows> how do I change  C:/Windows> to C:/

I recall correctly I was able to change C:/windows> by doing this C:/ windows> C..
Thanks

"Because I couldn't use my DOS to go to FDSK" ....

Was this from a dos window, in Win98?   or was it from a  Restart in MS-Dos mode?

I wouldn't be surprised if neither worked.        Windows won't eat itself.

Try this:

Go to Control Panel->Add Remove Programs->Start Up Disk.
Follow the instructions in there to make a bootable floppy.

When you've done that,   reboot from the floppy.   Be sure it is in the floppy drive when you restart the computer.   Watch to be sure it actually does boot from the floppy.   You should see something on the screen to indicate that it is booting from A: drive,  and you should see the light on the floppy drive itself, indicating that the drive is spinning.

Then try fdisk, if that is what you want to do.    That floppy should have it on it, somewhere.

Btw,  it is    fdisk    isn't it?    not  fdsk?

cd..
will move you up one directory.

cd \windows       would navigate you to    C:\windows   .

cd \boo\zoo\foofoo     would navigate you to   C:\boo\zoo\foofoo   if it already exists.

If you are formatting the disk then it is not necessary to "uninstall" Windows. In fact that is a complete waste of your time, as format basically "uninstalls" everything for you.

Like WillyW says you will need to create a Win98 bootup disk to restart in real DOS mode and format from there. Then you can install using your 98 disk. Or if you want to upgrade to XP, the installation process is even easier.

If I remember correctly Windows 98 installer asks you if you want to do some process which will let you uninstall Windows 98 at a later date, persumably if you are installing over an older operating system. I guess that means if you uninstall it, you will be left with some kind of DOS operating system from which you were doing these actions. However this time I guess something went wrong and you're not able to revert back to this state. It doesn't matter though. A boot-disk and you'll be all sorted! But in future remember this better way of formating and installing Windows 98 again. The uninstaller is just a red herring.
