    Shutting Down
    « on: January 13, 2007, 03:17:17 AM »
    Hey there guys,
    Yes another problem :(
Basically when trying to shut down, my laptop will do 1 of 2 things. The first is that it will shut down normally, but hang on the 'Windows is shutting down' for 5 minutes. The second scenario is that when i click on start, then 'Turn Off Computer' the egg timer will come up as the mouse and just stay there and the laptop wont shut down. But if I press the power off button on my laptop then it will shut down after 5 mins of being on the last screen where it says 'Windows is shutting down'. The same goes for if i CTRL-ALT-DEL and click shut down on there. Its just weird that when the laptop is just doing the egg timer thing but i do CTRL-ALT-DEL it responds instantly. Oh and i think its worth mentioning then if i do the CTRL-ALT-DEL thing, or just press the turn off button, even though it gets passed the 'Windows is shutting down' screen i have to do that thing where it scans my computer for disk errors at start up.
I don't know if I've explained it clearly enough, it is fairly complicated. So if anyone needs any more info please don't be afraid to ask.
    Thanks

    Chris

    What protection do you have?
    Specs?
    What happened before this started?

I remember your old posts now.
Hold on and I'll try and find something, I know of some cures for slow shut-downs.
Edit: Try the following, but be careful and don't change anything else.
[disclaimer]It works fine for me but I don't guarantee anything.  make a backup before you start if you have anything valuable that you want to keep.[/disclaimer]  To be honest, it should work fine.  Just want to make sure you're careful, because messing with the registry can have very bad effects.
Open up regedit - Start --> Run --> type regedit and press enter.
Navigate to HKEY_USERS --> .DEFAULT --> Control Panel --> Desktop
      Don't expand Desktop.
Change "AutoEndTasks" to 1, and change WaitToKillAppTimeout" to something lower than it is, like 30000.
The first value forces Windows to kill hung applications at shutdown, and the second is the time it waits to do this in milliseconds.
Above, it is set to 30 seconds.
Apply both of these fixes, reboot and see what happens.
      Hope this helps.
      Calum.

            That's because you're using Firefox.
I find I have a lot of issues with Microsoft downloads using FF.
Try using IE, much as it saddens me, to download it instead.
            See if that works.

                I've got absolutely no idea.
From the site it seems it is an installation package, so I assume you need to install it.
Other than that I've no idea.
I'm going to download it now and see.

If it installed correctly it should show as running in your services.
                        Start>Run>Msconfig>Services.

After starting up try shutting down straight away without opening any other programs.
Also try safe mode and see if it is slow in shutting down.
Don't use Ctrl+Alt+Del or the mechanical shutdown button just yet, stick with shutting down via your mouse.

Ok hi Fed and Cal. Ok well basically i cant do the suggestion about shutting down as soon as i start up in normall mode because my laptop automatically logs me on. Not log on screen. So the first oppoutunity i get to turn it off all the process would of already of loaded
Ill try the Safe mode suggestion now.

Right ok, safe mode worked fine. Tested it twice. So ive booted into normal mode and i tried shutting it down 3 times and it shut down all 3 times. So then i tried booting and then launching programs that i suspected might be causing it, but yet after launching them it still worked.
Its really starting to confuse me. When ive finished on this laptop ill leave it on for a while and try to shut down, post back what i find. Mean while any more suggestions?!

Nope just tried shutting it down and it did the same thing, freezing so i had to do the CTRL ALT DEL
Any more suggestions? Would a HJT log be recommended?!#

At a quick look there's nothing outstanding there but I'll have a closer look later today.
Have you tried disabling the startup entries in msconfig, re-booting then try shutting down?
If it shuts down properly you can re-enable them one at a time but you will have to re-boot then try for a shutdown for each one.

Msconfig only shows a limited number of startup locations, take a look with 'Autoruns' from www.sysinternals.com , you can temporarily disable entries from within the program too.

While your at it run these 2 online scans
                                                Ewido/AVG Online Scan
                                                Panda Activescan
but run ccleaner first to clean out any harmless junk before scanning.

StartupCPL is another handy one...it places a startup module in Control Panel.
