Internal modem has issues!
« on: January 28, 2007, 07:59:51 PM »
Hi.  I have a broadcom internal modem.  I also am on dial-up to connect to the internet.  If I leave the phone cord hooked up to the computer, it keeps the phone line open even  when I am not connected to the internet.  If left long enough, I eventually lose a dial tone, as though the phone was left off the hook.  Can this be fixed or should I get a new modem?

Computers are the future, not us. Learn everything you can about them while you still can, soon they will be learning about us... Every bit of advice that I give you is best guess, it is your choice whether or not you listen to it.

I do disconnect before unplugging the cord.  I have to unplug the cord after disconnecting because if I leave it plugged in the line stays open and I lose dial tone on the phone.  I know it sounds nutty but I promise I am disconnecting from the internet! Thank you for replying.  :)

Have you always had this problem with that modem?  Perhaps you should just replace the modem.  Some 56K modems are priced quite low.  See Modems > interface : PCI Bus (Plug & Play), from Newegg.com.

It has been a while since I used an internal modem.  I found external modems to be much better.
But I seem to recall having to deal with some odd problems.   Found that the phone line was plugged into the wrong place!   The modem had two connectors - labeled "Phone" and "Line".   The line from the wall was plugged into the "Phone" connector.   As I recall,  it would dial out,  but some odd things happened after that -  I don't remember the details.
Anyway,  that's an easy thing for you to check.

No, the modem was working fine, this is a new development and I have no idea what caused it? The modem might be going out?  I kind of thought maybe I should replace it. :D I just wanted to see if that seemed reasonable as I really don't know much about computers! Thank you all for your help!!!   :)
