Can't boot from CD
« on: January 30, 2007, 08:08:10 PM »
Greetings, I am currently having a problem booting from a CD. This is a new problem i have discovered, I built this PC about a month ago and got windows up and running just fine. at first I had just my master HDD and my slave CD drive but soon after i relized that my  mobo did not have more that one IDE slot on it. So i installed a PCI IDE card and put my secondary HDD on it and booted up fine. So just a few days ago i figured i wanted to install Linux on this PC so I popped the C/D in and... nothing. So I figure its the C/D and try my windows CD just to make sure. To my suprise I see that the Windows CD won't boot either. So this leads me to the question about the PCI IDE card. I think that might be the problem seeing as that is the only hardware i have installed in the last few weeks with this PC. How should i go about fixing this problem?
system information:
CD drive - NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A
PCI IDE card - Ultra ata/133 IDE Raid controller card (i think this is the model information) Sil680-IDE

if you need more information please let me know
Thanks for your time.

Set the boot order to cd rom drive first in the bios.

I think Willy is on to something here...it's possible you got lucky that the card picked up a HDD and it was recognised. Did you ever install the drivers for that card in the first place ? ?

Remember each HDD you use would need to have those drivers in place for it to recognise the card.

As to the Windows CD not booting is this a genuine Windows CD that says Microsoft all over it ? ?
Version ? ?

Yes I installed the drivers but i can reinstall them if you think that might help. And yes this is a genuine Windows c/d. It however is an upgrade disk. 0304 Part No. X10-52221. I put the Linux disk in my laptop and it worked just fine :(.
