AOL 9.0 causes computer to freeze.

My sister recently got a new laptop (Gateway MX8170 with Windows XP - SP2) and I've got it running pretty well for her, but I keep having one little problem.  Occasionally, when dialing up with AOL 9.0, the computer will freeze as the modem is initializing.  It doesn't happen every time, but it happens often enough to be somewhat of a bother.  My sister says it sometimes freezes at random times, but it mostly happens when trying sign on to AOL.  So, I'm guessing it probably has something to do with this.  Does anybody know what the problem might be, and how I might fix it?  Thanks.

EDIT:  She's apparently been having this problem ever since she first got her computer.  I just didn't find out about it until tonight.

Have you contacted Gateway, or checked to see if it is a known issue? This may be a hardware issue that you will never be able to resolve on your own.

And if the unit is still under warranty i wouldn't do too much self-diagnosis...

I've found similar problems online, but nothing seems to be too relevant.  I'm going to look around a bit more and try a couple of things.  If I don't come up with anything, I'll try contacting Gateway, although I've heard that their customer service is awful.
