Speed up OpenOffice
« on: February 07, 2007, 11:48:00 AM »
First of all, if you haven't got OpenOffice, I recommend downloading it.
It's a free full featured office suite that rivals MS Office.
IMHO, it's better in most ways  the only thing it lacks is a Publisher alternative, but it has extra applications.
Anyway, enough marketing hype, check the site for the full list of features etc.
I used to find that it was extremely slow, both opening the application, opening files, and at other times.
If you feel the same, read on.
Open up any OpenOffice application, and choose Tools --> Options.
Then, under General, go to Memory.
Set the cache for OpenOffice itself to something around 64Mb, and the memory per object to around 3-5Mb.
The defaults are ridiculously low, which slows the whole thing down.
Also, go to Java and disable it if you don't use it in OpenOffice - it takes an age to load.
It takes a few openings and closings of OpenOffice to feel the difference, but for me it's been quite substantial.
Feel free to experiment with the other options too, and play around with the memory options - users with more RAM will want to set it higher for more performance, users with less RAM will want to set it a bit lower to conserve RAM.
At least raise it from the defaults though, as they're far too low for decent speed.
Hope this helps some people out.
Calum.

Great suggestion Calum.  I bumped up the settings (not java) and it seemed to pick up speed.   :o :o

    Thanks  ;)

    Good tips, Calum.

I've been looking at OpenOffice.  I have the U3 version installed on a U3 flash drive.  I wouldn't go so far as to say it's better than MS Office in most ways, but it's clearly a very fine alternative to MS Office for folks who don't want pay the price for MS Office.  Indeed, to see something like this as freeware is really amazing.

The U3 option is a plus, also.  And, the Linux version provides Linux users an office suite.  Microsoft should be a little nervous.

The same, but for U3 drives.
I think when people realised we used portable apps, they wanted to standardize it and charge us more for the privilege of a special U3 drive.
That's how it works in the UK anyway.

I just bought a "U3 Smart" PNY 1GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive at Staples office supply store on 1/30/07.  I just happened to visit the store when they were selling the drive at a special sale price of $14.88.  On top of that, I got a $10 rebate.  So, my net cost, after local sales tax, was about $5.88.

I was not aware of U3 before buying this drive but I figured could not pass up that deal.  Visit U3 Software Central if you want to see what software is available for U3 drives.  And, http://www.u3.com/ has an interesting Demo (click on the View Demo button).

soybean you got me intrigued now...so they have made USB devices proprietary for the reason they can run portable applications ? ?
I womder if that stick was formatted would it be just a regular USB stick ? ?

No, formatting alone will not accomplish that.  But, it can be made into a regular USB drive by uninstalling the U3 software which is actually on a separate small partition on these U3 flash drives.  A U3 Launchpad Removal tool is available at http://www.u3.com/uninstall/.

Do you use PortableApps much patio?  I've recently acquired it for an 80GB external hardrive that I now take with me everywhere I go.  It's a joy to use!

Indeed i do...the Micro Center in my neighborhood was giving away 2G thumb drives for $4.99 after rebate and i grabbed 3 of them...
One has a trimmed down custom version of XP on it on top of DOS 6.2 that is bootable loaded with almost everything i need for service calls...quite handy and much lighter than the aluminum work case i used to lug around.
Unfortunately not all MBoards support booting to USB devices but i had fun building it.
I have to say though that the nicest feature is having my browser and e-mail client right there...it's like taking my desktop with me wherever i go.
I'm building a 2nd one with a stripped down ver. of Win2K Pro as i've found out that the XP is a little overkill.

Lucky . . . my 1Gb drive cost me about £20, the best deal I could find.
    That's like $40 or so.
Having XP or 2K, or any OS, on a thumb drive is a nice idea, but as you said, not all motherboards support booting from USB.  Wish I had a larger, faster thumb drive to install one on.
I have about 20 portable apps on my drive though, and about 300Mb of space for other files, such as schoolwork.
Best thing about it, for me, is having Firefox and Openoffice available at school instead of MS Office and IE, which I hate.
Portable Thunderbird is pointless for me because all access to the Gmail server is blocked at school, so I can't collect mail at school, otherwise I'd use that more often.
The other one I use a lot is Portable GAIM.
