well, they all play now!

seems like after i put the cd in....i have to run to nero tool...then after that runs...the cd plays...and it works for all of them!...

That's really strange!  It's just a diagnostic tool.  Did your friend burn the CD's with Nero or Easy CD Creator?

I think it should be Data CD Mode 1, not Mode 2.

Nero supports all modes and formats.  Default is ISO Mode1.  Either mode should read on your computer.  This is why I never back up important data to CD's.  I use a 2nd internal hard drive for data backups.

yea....i just put the dude's cds in.....ran the nero tool....opened the cds......copied them onto one of my own cds.....then it plays just fine......automaticly.

it's the strangest thing i've ever seen.....i still don't know why..or..how if i put his cd in....try to open it...it reads that error.....but as soon as i ran the nero tool.....it opened....then after that....i burned them myself....and now they play...normally.....

he must have burned them in some kind of mode 2...u think?.....it said mode 2....but wonder why i couldn't play the cds...until only after i ran the nero tool?

then as soon as the nero tool read the cd...and said it was a mode 2 cd...i could open it....play it...copy it...burn it......anything i wanted to do with it.

strange process....but i guess it's all over now....the nero tool is what helped the most....now that i've redone the cds myself...i just got rid of the nero, but the nero...opened that cd right up...and i tried opening it thousands of times with out running it first....and it only opened after i ran nero tool everytime.

that just amazes me......but its the truth

Could be a conflict with XP's built-in burning software.  I turned it off when I installed Nero Burning Rom.

Some CDs burned by Win XP cannot be read.
Microsoft has acknowledged various problems with the inbuilt software that can result in files (or sometimes whole disks) being unreadable when they have been burned with the inbuilt software. See MSKB 320174. They have posted a patch on the Microsoft Download Center, which may resolve the issue. (Click here to go directly to the patch download page.) It is recommended, though, that you only apply this patch if you are actually suffering from trouble, not just “because it is there.”
