Phone keeps ringing after ISP connects
    « on: February 10, 2007, 09:59:07 PM »
Hello Forum: Dell Dimension 24-Windows XP SP2-IE6.0 Modem is Intel537EPV9xDFCPI. When my dialup ISP(NetZero) connects to the web the phone begins to ring continuously. No pauses. Just a long non-stop ring. I have not changed anything. Began about a week ago. I have to disconnect the DC power supply which powers the speaker phone to stop the ringing. My incoming Verizon phone line goes to the computer then to the answering machine and then to the phone. Is this a modem problem? I get online with no problem and do not experience any disconnects. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
    Bill

I would try putting the answering machine and phone on another line.

Another option might be splitter.  Plug the splitter into your wall phone jack and then your can connect your telephone to one of the two jacks on the splitter instead of connecting it to the computer.

This would indicate an AC feedback into the phone. Since modems have a "bridge lifter" built into them, whatever is connected to phone side is taken out of the circuit. You can check this by verifying that there is no dial tone present on the phone. AC feedback must have a path to ground to cause the phone to ring continuously. The only path it has is through the speaker phone power suppy, unless the modems bridge lifter is defective. Most modern phones are equiped with polarity guards. Sometimes, but not always, a simple line reversal will correct the problem. You should try replacing the phone and/or the power supply if reversing the line does not solve the problem.

2k_dummy, what, exactly, do you mean by "line reversal"?

The phone line. Open the phone jack and reverse the red and green wires. (Based on standard installation in US)
