MS Paint simple question- please help !
« on: February 12, 2007, 10:30:08 AM »
After I enter my text, choosing the color red. I click outside the dotted box to close the command and the red text becomes grey. The color red is still selected. When the text box is in use my red text is displayed fine but as soon as I exit the command- grey. I checked under Image > Attributes > and "colors" is selected. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what your problem is there.  I have no problem changing text color when entering text in a text box in Paint and having it stick.  Can you try using Paint on another computer just to make sure this isn't something you're doing wrong as opposed to a glitch in Paint on your computer?

Is the bitmap you are editing a monochromatic one? After typing the text, can you use the fill colour ability on the letters?

It's a .gif   and when I looked at the attributes if photoshop it says it has 8-bit color. No the fill colour is just another shade of grey over it again. Earlier I was able to fill the letters in photoshop to red. Now the same thing occurs as in paint. The red filler just over laps another shade of grey over the letters.

To Soybean- no this is the only pc.

      Very odd.

Does this mean it's only this one picture file that is affected? I would be tempted to go to 100% zoom, take a screenshot, and paste into a fresh image file.

Try this. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Program, and click on Add/Remove Windows Components (on the left side of the panel).  Select Accessories and Utilities.  Click on Details. Select Accessories.  Click on Details. Uncheck the box for Paint, click OK, and close the panel. Now, reverse the procedure and install Paint. Then, open Paint and try it again.  Problem solved?

Ok...the problem is that your file is a .gif  This type of file keeps it own color table. This color table can be changed and played with to cut down on the file size with programs like Photoshop. In your case it was striped of colors that were not needed for this image. You can't edit or add colors to this image until you convert it to a .jpg format. Than you will need to change your mode in Photoshop to RGB. This will let you add colors and than if you need it still in a .gif format you sill need to resave it as a .gif.

Since Photoshop has been introduced into this discussion, can you clarify one point?  When I first read your original post, I was under the impression you were talking about a new object being created in Paint, not an image that had also been manipulated in another program, such as Photoshop.  So, can you simply open Paint and enter colored text into a new/blank object and save it with those colors being retained?

And, I believe the format should make no difference here.
