You don't always press DEL. It depends on the Make and model of computer.
 
Click on the self-help link and then look for BIOS codes.
 
It should tell you on the boot screen.

You know, its also incredibly possible that he had a serious medical condition. eg: ADHD (which, yes, is worse than ADD)
