    New Graphic Cards
    « on: February 18, 2007, 05:48:58 AM »

Gaming and video fans are understandably eager for this year's CeBIT: the next generation of graphics cards will be on display at the computer fair in Hanover, ready to support the DirectX 10 standard that is integrated into Windows Vista. The new graphics chips will make even sharper images a reality. Many hardware makers are also redoubling their efforts for more powerful graphics solutions for laptops.

"Graphic chips from the new generation are above all else of interest to gamers," says Carsten Spille, editor at the magazine PC Games Hardware. The introduction of Windows Vista and the new DirectX10 graphics interface are intended to make games much more true-to-life. "Things like light calculations and shading can be depicted much more clearly," says Jens Neuschaefer from graphic chip maker Nvidia.

Improved processing of image data is also being aided by a new version of the "unified shader" architecture, allowing landscapes to be drawn more realistically, says Martin Grothe, a product manager from Elitegroup in Munich. The Taiwanese graphic card maker is using the CeBIT fair to exhibit a model from the Nvidia chip family, the N8800GTX-768MX: as with all cards with current Geforce-8 processors, the card possesses 768 Megabytes of GDDR-3 memory with 1.8 Gigahertz of processing power and a 575 megahertz chip.    :o

Need your pixels to whiz even faster? Overclocked chips are probably the best option: Asus is presenting a water-cooled card at the CeBIT, the EN8800 GTX, which manages to milk roughly 11 per cent more power from the Nvidia chip. That adds up to a 630 Megahertz processor with two gigahertz of effective storage space.

Users can certainly expect new speed records in the competition between Nvidia and AMD-subsidiary ATI: ATI is using the CeBIT to premiere a new series of cards that, according to unofficial press reports, will be called X-2000 and feature a processor named R600. That will make the race for the speed title all the more narrow, Spille says.

"Nvidia has until now been way ahead of the competition-but with the new graphic chip AMD may catch up to them," says Spille. The ATI chip will also support DirectX 10 and offer improved "shader" graphics. It is expected on the market by the end of the first quarter, says ATI spokeswoman Almut Otto from Munich.

Video fans will also be well served by novelties at the CeBIT fair: the new crop of cards is particularly well suited for high- definition video content, Otto says. That means that the cards offer both DVI and HDMI input ports that are adapted for the new HDCP copy protection. These allow HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray media to be played back from a computer using a television or projector.

Hardware makers are also working hard on powerful graphics solutions for laptops.

"Laptops are getting more and more interesting for gamers," says Daniel Moll from Asus. Asus is displaying a laptop called A8Jr at the CeBIT. It contains ATI's new Radeon X2300 graphics chip for improved performance during 3D gaming.

Asus is also presenting the XG Station, an external graphic card adapter for laptops. The card slot allows gamers to equip their laptops with any PCI Express graphics card of choice.

    Nice find.
The 8 series has been out for a while, but the R600 draws ever closer.
Hopefully the rest of the 8 series will be out soon, so I can add them to my GPU guide.
Oh, and the X2300 will not be DX10 compliant, contrary to many rumours.
It will be another low end chip, but better than the current generation.
It was hope that it'd be a low end DX10 card, but it's not to be.

bleh. i have a 7600gt. it does everything i want it to do, and then some. 1500mhz memory clock, 590mhz core clock, 256mb 128 bit, PCI-E, supports SLi too, which i will soon be running.

"ditto"  I have the same and I agree.  Until someone places 1500.00 in my mailbox, I am satisfied with the 7600GT ! ~ :)

i do plan to buy another to run in SLi.. but that wont be until i cant run games well on this one alone..

personally i wouldnt bother, as the 7600gt is a nice card however it is a dirext x 9 card. the new games will now require a direct x 10 card. so i would save your $ and get at least an 8800 or so if you want to play the new games coming out.

my previous system had a directX7 card, nvidia geforce MX4000 PCI, and it ran directX9 games, so i do not see why these will not run directx10

but after lookin at these cards:

          [link]http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=Property&Subcategory=48&Description=&Type=&srchInDesc=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=&PropertyCodeValue=679%3A24922&PropertyCodeValue=679%3A24921&PropertyCodeValue=699%3A9646[/link]
          (whew, what a hyperlink..)

i think i'll probably save and get an 8800, wont be till after i get a job though.. those things cost about half the cost of my computer..

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut... if this thing will play the games even at low settings for a while i might save and get two of these:

          http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814186020

i dunno though.. i'd need a new power supply and everything.. this lil 500w couldnt push one of those even if i put a adapter on it..

The new games "should" be backward engineered, I don't think a nice pair of 7600GT  in the SLI mode  will have any problems....
The hardware requirements are getting more intense but I would hope the programmers are incorporating the older hardware versions as well...
            we'll see ?

if one will run them, even on low settings, then i will make due till i can afford to go all out for the next gen. (new power supply and two new 8800's)

                BFG tech   ( it comes over-clocked a little )

It's the 6th review down from the top...  I find this hard to believe unless these are pretty low settings..?
I am considering another one of these  BFG 7600 gt  and going SLI ...

                Could be low settings.
But lots of people get very high FPS on CounterStrike, it's one of those games with a very optimized engine so runs well on most PCs.
It's not clocked much higher than a standard 7600GT.
