Computer has NO power whatsoever
« on: March 05, 2007, 02:38:05 PM »
I'm sure you hear this often but Calum told me to try you guys because we are both lost...here is our message...

Kristy:
Quick Summary...custom computer..sparking noise sounded like coming from cdrom and shut down and won't start up for nothing
 Calum:
Do the fans spin?
 Kristy:
no
 Kristy:
when i press the power button there is nothing
 Calum:
Sounds like you got a problem with something for sure, ahha
 Calum:
*haha
 Calum:
I think it may be the PSU
 Calum:
Or you shorted somehting
 Calum:
Was it working before?
 Kristy:
i put in one that i know works because i am using my cousins computer with it right now
  Kristy:
i also replaced the motherboard today
 Kristy:
everything was working then it made the noise so i tried psu and that didn't work so i tried motherboard and that didn't work
 Calum:
Ah, OK
 Calum:
So nothing changed or happened before this?
 Kristy:
you are correct on the last statement
 Calum:
I don't think you'll need a shop, if I can't help you then I can direct you to some people that will
 Calum:
Check first that the cables are plugged in firmly
  Kristy:
ok
 Calum:
Are you comfortable with working inside your PC?
 Kristy:
yes i am however to do anything on it right now while we are chatting i would have to take the power supply out of the computer i am on and put it in that one
  Calum:
Ah, OK, just checking
 Calum:
What you need to do is check the cables are plugged in firmly, and check the inside of the case for accumulated dust and any cables not plugged in firmly.
 Kristy:
ok done that
 Calum:
From what I'm seeing I think it is the CMOS battery, actually
 Calum:
If the motherboard is fine and the PSU is OK too
 Calum:
If I were you I'd make a thread on these forums - http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi - and see what they have to say
  Calum:
But I have a feeling it is the CMOS battery

*Anyways please help me I need what is on my hard drive and I don't know what else to do...I'm a single mom with no job and no extra money to take it to a shop (already called they want $250) Thank you.

You could have a blown fuse in the power supply.

So, you switched out the PSU and your computer works now?  Sounds like you already found the problem...

No I'm using a different computer (older, slower) to access the internet for help.  But since my PSU don't work in either computer, I am having to switch the PSU from my cousin's computer (one I'm using right now) to MY computer each time I get advice.  But what else could it be?  Not motherboard, battery, power cable, wall outlet, or PSU.  What is left that wouldn't let the fans spin or make any sound what so ever?  I even tried a different power switch and that didnt' fix it.  Could it be CPU or ram that wouldn't let it do ANYTHING?

You may have a short in the case.
Make sure everything is mounted correctly and that nothing is touching the case that shouldn't be.
