Problem updating Java.
« on: March 06, 2007, 11:41:33 PM »
I was wondering if anyone is having trouble updating Java Runtime 5.0...  I need to install Update 11, but when I try, it stops about halfway through and I get the following error...

Error 1606.  Could not access network location http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/GetFile/1.5.0_11-b03/windows-586//jo150000.cab.

Is anyone else having any problems or is it just on my end?

EDIT:  Also...after my first attempt, it slowed down my connection drastically and I wasn't able to access the site at all.  I've restarted and I'm trying again.

Alright, I just tried again and got the exact same results, including the connection problems.  (It took about three minutes for this page to load.)  I'm on dial-up, by the way.

EDIT:  Actually, the connection issue has subsided this time.  Just took a few minutes to get back up to normal speed.  It might not even be related to the Java problem, but I figured it's worth mentioning.

I updated mine with no problems.
Go to java.com and download from there, does it work now?
Dial-up . . . poor you.
Anyway, maybe my magic will work and it'll fix itself, eh?

Thanks, I'll give it a try when I get out of class later today.

Calum, I'm relying on your magic to fix this for me.  And maybe it can convert my dial-up to broadband?

I don't think it'll go that far.
And soybean, that's the link for Firefox.  I'm pretty sure CBMatt uses IE6, though I could be wrong.

http://java.com/en/ works for either IE and Firefox.  Depending on which browser you're using, clicking on the Download Now link takes you to the appropriate download page for your browser.  In other, the website detects what browser you're using and leads you in the right direction.

It does, that's what I'm saying.
I guess you followed the link using Firefox.
Following it using IE gives a different result, each will only work in that browser.
So your first link will not work in IE.

You're right.  That first link I posted, http://java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp, is one I retrieved when using Firefox.   :-[

All right, just wanted to be sure we didn't send anyone off to download the wrong thing.
Use either of the links that are to http://java.com/en/, and you'll be sure to get the right one.

Ha, don't feel bad about the wrong link, soybean.  I would've seen the Mozilla mentions before downloading, so no worries.

And Calum...yes, I'm on IE6.  Good catch.  Heh.

Alrighty, time to give this another try.

Calum, it looks like your magic doesn't work for me.  I'm just going to give the manual download a try, I guess.

Matt why not have a buddy with high-spped DLoad what you need ( prepare a wish list  ;) ) and have him throw them on a thumb drive for you ? ?

I would if any of my friends had high-speed internet.  Heh.  Most of us in this area are still on dial-up.  Broadband was only recently introduced here maybe a year ago.  When I first moved up here, MTV and Disney were new channels.

Ah dear.
The manual download may be a solution, just hope you don't spend all day doing it.

Manual was 15.8 MB, so it only took about 40 minutes.  That probably seems like forever for you high-speed guys, but it's actually not too bad on 28.8kbps.  Ha.  Installing this way worked just fine, by the way, and I now have the latest update on my computer.

Does seem like forever, that'd be a few minutes for me.
Anyway, glad you got it sorted.
