Can't Install Win XP
« on: March 23, 2007, 10:42:42 AM »
I burn a copy of every CD I buy. I use the copy for installation of the program.

I burned a copy of my new Windows XP CD and used it for installation on a four year old desktop that has Windows 98SE. I received an error message:

Fatal Error:
An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.
One of the components that windows needs to continue could not be installed.
A component's file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest.
Press OK to view the log file.

I have a friend that has a computer service business and he sold me an OEM copy. It has never been used and was sealed in the original plastic wrap. He said to insert the CD and follow the instructions and be sure to make NTFS as the file system of choice, which I did. Part way through, after entering my keys, the posted message came up.

I’ve since ran dban and reinstalled Win 98SE and the computer drivers for my audio, video, ethernet and usb devices.

I may try installing Win XP using the original copy.

Can anyone explain why I can't install Win XP?

Thanks.

A straight burn copy of an XP CD even if brand new will not give you a good installation CD copy...this is part of Gates's anti-piracy campaign.
How did you do this and what program did you use ? ?

Travel to NTLite 's site and do some research on creating a bootable XP CD...

It supports your burning program.

Diagnose your RAM. DOn't upgrade, boot from the CD.

I have 256MB ram and it works great with win98SE and it should be enough for XP. How do I diagnose RAM?

I tried booting from the XP CD and got the same result.
