How do I read a HJT report?
« on: March 23, 2007, 02:23:38 AM »
How do I understand what everything on it means? I noticed that some people on here just look at an HJT report and can spot something that is wrong. How can I do that? Or better yet, what is it that you look for when reading HJT reports?

Be sure to go through the whole thread.  The mentioned tutorials are all really good, but you'll want to focus mainly on the training schools.  I personally opted to go with Geeks To Go, but they're all good choices.  Just get a feel for each forum and see which one you like best.  And trust me...based on my personal experience...if you want to get into this, you definitely want to join one of those schools.  You wouldn't believe all of the different things you learn that you most likely won't learn simply by following tutorials.  I've gotten to the point where I can skim through a log and easily spot various infections, but I've still got a long way to go, and you always want to be meticulous (even if you're 100% sure that you know what you're doing).

Bear in mind...doing this is a long process.  It isn't all that time-consuming (I only spend maybe three/four hours a week...not including time spent waiting on my instructors), but overall, it takes a decent amount of time to complete.  It's very refreshing, though, and I'm grateful to oddjob for suggesting that I take this course of action.  There's definitely a sense of accomplishment once I've cleared a log.

Anyway...enough of my rambling.  Read through that thread and take the training into consideration.

HJT is only meant to be used by people who understand what it says. Use Adaware SE/AVG Free and Windows Defender instead to save yourself a world of hurt should you delete the wrong things..

Oh and I have used it before but I have always posted the report on here for someone else to have a look at it for me. Id like to be able to do it myself.
    Thanks again guys.

Not trying to discourage you by any means but doing it yourself has gotten many people into trouble and has even resulted in machines that won't even boot.
The learning curve is pretty big but a worthwile investment.
This is why we approach the logs with caution.

Decent link.  Make sure you read all the comments to the right, and use common sense.  Sometimes, it's mislabeled.  There's still a level of knowledge you need before you do this.

Trust me, he's not kidding about the world of hurt.

Hijackthis.de is a handy site, but I would avoid using it, as I've found that it can often be fairly unreliable with certain things.  Like everyone is saying...use caution.  HJT can do a lot of good, but if not used properly, it can also do a lot of bad.

I google each thing I'm thinking about deleting. If I get a bunch of HJT logs, or an analysis which identifies it with a program, I ignore it. If I see a bunch of Antivirus results... it's history.

I tend to use Google as more of a backup.  I try to stick to CastleCops as much as I can.  If they don't have info on something, then I head over to Google and read various logs to see what different experts say.  It's just too bad that when they tell you to remove something, they don't usually say why.  Heh.

Personally, I think it's nice to have an experimental computer.  I was going to use our old Dell for such purposes until my grandma decided to take it instead.  Heh.
