« on: March 27, 2007, 05:25:02 PM »
OS windows xp home ed

I cannot play mpeg videos in either real player or WMP. I have updated my drivers, re-installed both players more than once.
The files are not corrupt or damaged as they play on Quicktime.

please can any one help me as its driving me crazy!!!!

Do you get any error messages when you try to play them in WMP? If so, what are they? If it mentions anything about decoders or decompressors, or missing codec, try getting DivX from here.

    Hi Dilbert,
No there is no error code given it just says it has encountered a problem.
Also I have already downloaded all the DivX suite and it hasn't made any difference.

      Two other things:

      1. What version of WMP?

      2. Can you play .wav, .mp3, or anything like that in WMP?

DivX is one codec, but this one is for MPEG files. Let me know if this helps:

I've always used ffdshow, and it's worked great.

This is just a guess, but maybe the file is just named wrong, and it isn't a mpeg. Could it be a .mov or something else that's only played in quicktime?

It's possible, but I doubt it. There's a way to check (not necessary):

In the folder with the file, go to Tools > Folder options, then View, then uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

However, I think if he says it's an MPEG, it is; Quicktime throws a hissy fit every time you play something besides a .mov file. ::)

The file ext on the names are either .mpeg or .mpg but when checking file properties they are showing as file type: movie clip
Being a total beginner and not really computer literate does this confirm your suspicions?

          many thanks

Does the opposite; it proves we are dealing with a MPEG, not a MOV. I'm almost out of ideas. I've got one shot left, and it's a long one: Do you have software for putting music on a Samsung or similar phone? I've read an article where removing that caused it to work.

Like I said, it's a REALLY long shot. But I'll still ask, because I'm stumped. The only other thing I can think of besides the above is to remove WMP 11 and see if it works on WMP 10. :-\
