I read that FAQ and followed it without success. Running appwiz.cpl brought up the add/remove dialog where Acrobat Reader shows to be installed, but the change/remove icon is non-existent. When I went to the tree there were no folders for Adobe, either under Program Files or Application Data. I dropped to the cmd level and looked at the directories and Adobe isn't there.
Following that, I used the code that was generated when I attempted the install and searched the registry.

I removed all references to the string, Adobe, and Acrobat, yet my attempt at reinstalling after defragging the registry and rebooting returns a message that I "already have a functional installation of the software and this install will abort".
I'm reluctant to go any deeper into the registry. I don't want to blow such a hole in it that Windows pukes. I just can't find the pointer to Adobe that is preventing a re-install.
