Disappearing Files on Mac Linked to Virus?
« on: April 04, 2007, 08:34:23 PM »
We have a macintosh G4, running OS 9.2.  Recently everything is a major folder on our system disappeared.  Not detectable through using unerase.

I copied everything else on the hard drive to an external drive, then located the files for the email database, (using entourage, so files were located in a Microsoft user data file).

In attempting to open these from the external drive with another computer using Entourage, everything on the external drive disappeared.   I then discussed this with an associate who recalled prior to the initial problem having opened an email; she believes the subject line was "A postcard for you".

We think this was a virus that seems to cause a disappearance of folders, but the volumn still seems to be present.  For example, on the external drive (350 gig) it still registered 268 gig, which was the free space with the recent transfer.

Number one for us is restoring the email files.  The rest is websites that have been backed up through other means.  Any suggestions?  Really appreciate guidance to rid this system of a virus, if this is the case and to restore the email files.
Thanks,
Teresa

If no one replies:

It sounds like the system has gone corrupt.

No problem
This is common on Apple/Mac computers
Due to the nature of how the OS operates, the system can go corrupt after time. It is recommended that you reinstall the Operating System to replace the current OS files.

Put in your install CD
Do not format the drive
Only select the option that replaces the Operating System files
