Need Advice
« on: April 09, 2007, 01:47:50 PM »
Hello, I have a few questions about purchasing some upgrades for my computer. My goal is to turn this boring dell dimension 2400 into a gaming  machine  ;D

I would like to get a new motherboard with a PCI-E slot, without having to upgrade EVERYTHING else. I am willing to buy a new CPU though. So this is what my plan is:

Buy this motherboard.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157106

Buy this CPU.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116027

And I already have this power supply. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182016

And this Graphics card.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143049

And I bought 1 GB of RAM from crucial awhile back.

MY current system specs are.
System:Dell Dimension 2400
CPU: Intel Celeron 2.20 GHz
RAM: 1.2 GB DRR SDRAM (DRR 400 I believe)
Video: some integrated 64MB crap
Windows XP service pack 1

My current motherboard doesn't have any AGP or PCI-E slots...just three PCI.

Will this work?

Thank you.

Most dells have proprietary motherboards and power connectors. You may want to research this before spending any money on this path. With that MB you are correct though in that it will never be a gaming machine. That is not what is was designed for.

Thanks for replying so fast.

And what would happen if I did have proprietary components?

If I'm changing out the motherboard and power supply why would it even matter?

It may not physically fit in the case properly.  ;)

pffft. Then I'll buy a new case for 15-20 bucks.

Other then that, do you think it will work?  :)

If you buy a cheap case with poor airflow and a cheap PSU that could end up damaging the components then you will not have saved any money.

The other components should work, except maybe the RAM.

better buy new system that is designed for gaming than spending a lot of money!  ;)
