Win 98, + usb
« on: April 11, 2007, 01:54:37 AM »
I don't know what to do, I can get to Safe mode and then hit a wall.
I tried to use a flash drive with my old win 98 mach. to recover some photos, it would not accept my device. I then shut down my comp and attempted to restart.
During the restart the plug/play (?) from my flash drive attempted to install in my comp. I am now caught in a loop.
In normal startup I see my win98 logo then it blacks out and tried to load the flash mem. program and gets stuck. When I load in safe I have attempted to use Dr. Watson and discover I have incompatible software trying to load but I can't find it and watson does not give me a location or remedy, just notice the softW is unrecognised. I have looked over my start menu and can find nothing I do not recognise. I also checked the install/uninstall menu and found nothing. My computer tell me it has unrecognised software but does not tell me where it is.
I am stuck can anyone help?

Win98 needs proper drivers for any USB device...it sounds like those drivers are not for Win98.

Who makes thedrive ? ?

" During the restart the plug/play (?) from my flash drive attempted to install in my comp"  Did you remove the flash drive from the USB connector?[/color
You may have to go into the registry and remove that software you installed for your flash drive.   But first, do the Control/Alt/Delete thing and look at what's running? Do a "print screen" and post what shows.

Use win98's step-by-step option and prevent the driver or other software for the pen drive from loading. This may also show you where it is loading from and allow you to manually remove it.

      Thanks for the info.
This comp is using W98, SE I believe, Manf. was Biltz Comp. Actually been a while since I checked so I am not positive.
The device was a PNY flash drive.
When the Screen goes dark during the normal start-up and I use the Ctrl,Alt,Del
all the happens is restart. I can get to Safe mode without trouble and that is where I get stuck. I also have tried to do Comp Main. and dump all temp files and
      this has not helped.

What are you referring to when you say load step-by-step option? Can I somehow load each program individually, how, I have seen the option to load program groups?I have seen this option when I am selecting the safe mode but I was not quite sure how to use it properly.

When you get into safemode look under Add/Remove programs inside Control Panel...if the PNY program is listed then select Remove.
It will ask if you want to restart...select No or Cancel.
Go back into Control Panel to System/device Manager...find the listing for the USB stick...right click and select Remove. Power down. Remove the stick and re-boot...it may take 2 or 3 re-boots to act normal again but be patient and let it finish each boot sequence before powering down...

Good Luck and Hope This Helps.

PNY has a Win 98SE driver for their USB flash drives.  I've installed it on a Win 98SE system and it worked fine.  This is for Win 98SE, not Win 98.

To determine which version of Windows you have, right click on My Computer and select Properties.

If your flash drive is one of the Attache models, go here and download a driver IF you have Win 98SE: http://www2.pny.com/support/support_landing_subcat.aspx?SectionID=1083&RootSectionID=1057&TypeID=5.  PNY's website must be overloaded; it's not always available, so be patient.

If you have Win 98, I think you're going to have to use some other means to get those files.

Just a thought. Is there any way to set my comp for an earlier date as can be done with XP, and reset everything?

I just dug in a bit further and found that Dr.Watson says, Does not appear to be a win 95 plug-and-play compatible display driver???
But I have win 98 in my comp?? Go figure?

Win98 does not have a system restore feature...

Follow my instructions posted above step by step and we'll go from there...
